COUNCIL SPEAKER CHRISTINE C. QUINN, HHC AND DOHMH ANNOUNCE PRIMARY CARE INITIATIVE UPDATE

In a major development stemming from the Council’s 2008 Primary Care Initiative Report, Speaker Christine C. Quinn, announced $2.75 million has been allocated to 10 neighborhood and school-based clinics throughout the five boroughs. The Speaker was joined by Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) Senior Vice President LaRay Brown, Roger Platt, Assistant Commissioner Pre-School and Adolescent Health at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Council Members and several members of the Primary Care Initiative working group.

Speaker Quinn, Local Elected Leaders Demand Preservation of Vital Health Services in West Manhattan

City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn and local elected leaders today called on the state to strike down Continuum Health Partner’s proposal that would remove emergency room facilities at St. Vincent’s Hospital. The elected officials released a letter to New York State Department of Health Commissioner Richard Daines, calling on him to take action.

Speaker Quinn, Mayor Bloomberg, and Council Members Eugene and Williams Announce New Payroll Deduction Program for City Employees to Support Haitian Relief Effort

City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced that in the employee pay period that begins this weekend, employees of the City of New York will be able to set aside part of their paychecks directly to aid in the Haitian disaster relief efforts. The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City will ensure contributions through the program are directed to reputable organizations that are providing relief in Haiti. |

Speaker Quinn and Council Members Laud City Law Banning Sale of Flavored Tobacco Products
Leaders of health and clean air groups joined Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Council Members Joel Rivera, Maria del Carmen Arroyo, Inez E. Dickens and Letitia James to reiterate their support for the recent enactment of a city law to bar the sale of certain flavored tobacco products in New York. The health advocates actions came after the city was sued by two tobacco companies – the U.S. Smoking Tobacco Manufacturing Co. and U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Brands inc. – asking a federal judge to overturn the ban signed into law by the mayor on October 28, 2009.

Speaker Quinn Delivers Council Charter Meeting Address
Speaker Christine C. Quinn addressed the City Council's Charter meeting on Wednesday. She welcomed back returning members and congratulated twelve newly elected members. Quinn was re-elected as Speaker and James Oddo was re-elected as Council Minority Leader. Charter Remarks 

Council: Don't Cut our Transit Services
Hardworking New York City transit riders, who were subjected to a 10 percent fare increase just a few short months ago, have every right to demand that mass transit service at the very least be maintained at current levels. The Council is proposing that the MTA reallocate $140 million of capital funds to temporarily close an unexpected gap in its operating budget. Tell the MTA to NOT cut our services.

Speaker Quinn Announces “FoodWorks New York”
Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn announced “FoodWorks New York”, a new effort by the City Council to produce the first ever comprehensive plan to use New York City’s food system to create jobs, improve public health and protect the environment. Over the next six months, the Council will work with experts from government, industry, labor and academia, as well as hunger and environmental advocates and community leaders.  They’ll be closely examining every step in New York City’s food cycle – production, processing, transport, retail, consumption, and post-consumption.

Speaker Quinn, Council Members, Advocates Launch HIV/AIDS Social Networking Campaign
Speaker Christine C. Quinn and representatives from HIV/AIDS organizations from around New York City launched a social networking driven campaign to encourage and increase HIV/AIDS awareness. The groundbreaking campaign, which was announced on World AIDS Day utilizes YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to re-start the conversation about HIV and AIDS in our communities. New Yorkers will be able to send in their video testimonies to “I Talk Because…” by emailing italkbecause@gmail.com.

Mammogram Wait Times Better Than Expected, Nadler Bill Will Require Insurers to Cover Screening Mammography and MRI
As part of the continued effort in fighting the battle against breast cancer, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, together with Congressman Jerrold Nadler unveiled a citywide comprehensive report ‘Access to Mammography in New York City’: Facility Wait Times, Locations and Proximity to Transportation’ which details New York City’s women’s access to screening mammograms. The report reveals wait times are shorter than expected, and that facilities with longer wait times are referring women to other facilities where they can be seen sooner.

NYPL Job Search Center Opens
In response to overwhelming demand by the public, The New York Public Library has launched
  'JobSearch@NYPL', a campaign to ensure that every job-seeking New Yorker is connected to the technologies and information they need – for free. Speaker Christine Quinn, Council Member Gale Brewer and Library President Paul LeClerc, among other officials, were at the Industry and Business Library at 34th Street and Madison Avenue to unviel the program.
