Council Creates Five Minute Grace Period for Alternate Side Parking and Muni-Meter Violations


At Monday's Stated Council meeting, the City Council voted on several pieces of legislation to improve parking rules and regulations around the five boroughs. Specifically, the Council voted to adopt legislation that will:
• Create a five minute grace period for alternate side parking and muni-meter violations;
• Improve notification about temporary and permanent changes in parking restrictions;
• Improve DOT notification about various parking meter changes; and
• Update parking permit rules for members of the clergy.

The Council also voted to approve the construction of a new police academy in Queens’ College Point as a comprehensive environmental protection resolution in support of a variety of actions to protect New York City’s water supply from the dangers of natural gas drilling.

Mammogram Wait Times Better Than Expected, Nadler Bill Will Require Insurers to Cover Screening Mammography and MRI
As part of the continued effort in fighting the battle against breast cancer, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, together with Congressman Jerrold Nadler unveiled a citywide comprehensive report ‘Access to Mammography in New York City’: Facility Wait Times, Locations and Proximity to Transportation’ which details New York City’s women’s access to screening mammograms. The report reveals wait times are shorter than expected, and that facilities with longer wait times are referring women to other facilities where they can be seen sooner.

NYPL Job Search Center Opens
In response to overwhelming demand by the public, The New York Public Library has launched
  'JobSearch@NYPL', a campaign to ensure that every job-seeking New Yorker is connected to the technologies and information they need – for free. Speaker Christine Quinn, Council Member Gale Brewer and Library President Paul LeClerc, among other officials, were at the Industry and Business Library at 34th Street and Madison Avenue to unviel the program.

Housing Asset Renewal Program (HARP) - A $20 million commitment to fund a pilot program that would turn unsold condominiums, market-rate rental buildings and stalled construction sites into affordable housing opportunities for moderate and middle-income families.  The pilot could covert as many as 400 units into affordable housing over the next year.
